about the artist

The paintings and oil pastels of nationally recognized artist Marianne Mitchell speak of harmony and balance. They are abstract explorations born out of spontaneous mark and intentional thought. Inspired by nature and the surrounding environment, she gives form to her work through architectonic and organic motifs constructed with multiple layers of color. The viewer experiences juxtapositions of light and dark values, transparent and opaque color, and varying degrees of surface texture. Each piece is imbued with Marianne's understanding of the necessary coexistence of disparate things. Contradiction and compliment are held in visual poetic balance.

“Mitchell’s paintings are at once dance and dialogue. They expand our perception and enrich the rooms in which they reside. It is these qualities which so aptly describe the human experience, and ultimately, which resonate with us.”

Marianne has shown widely, through group and solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. Her work is featured in private and corporate collections both nationally and internationally.
