biography
The daughter of architects, Marianne Mitchell grew up in the Andorra Natural Area just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her parents Ehrman B. Mitchell and Hermine S. Mitchell designed and built the house where she spent her childhood, and now resides in with architect husband Bruce Schmit and daughter Kirin along with their three cats. The structure of the house, open floor plan, and glass facades which frame the outdoor landscape, have been influential in shaping Marianne’s artistic vision of creating a sense of place through the balance of architectural and organic form.
A graduate of Germantown Friends School, Marianne received her BFA from Washington University, doing post graduate work in Japan, China, and at the Vermont Studio Center. Marianne is the recipient of the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation Fellowship in Painting, and has exhibited in New York, California, Washington DC, Pennsylvania, and Scotland. She is currently represented by Zenith Gallery in Washington DC, Newmark Gallery in San Francisco, and the Rosenfeld Gallery in Philadelphia. Her work hangs in numerous private and public collections locally, nationally, and internationally. Marianne’s studio is just outside of Philadelphia in the Norristown Arts Building.
